An animal rights group has called on Dublin Zoo to replace its gorillas with a computerised exhibition following the death of Harry, an adult silverback, on Sunday.

The western lowland gorilla died at the age of 29 after a short illness and a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out.

John Carmody, founder of the Animal Rights Action Network (Aran), said that the zoo should use Harry’s death as an opportunity to begin phasing out its gorilla enclosure and replace it with a digital exhibition.

The animal rights campaigner said that the death of Harry and the shooting of
