Westboro Baptist Church files permits to protest during RNC
CLEVELAND– The Westboro Baptist Church filed permits to protest during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this summer.
The group, known for protesting same-sex marriage and military funerals, is requesting to use the official speakers platform at Public Square on Tuesday, July 19, according to the applications. The Westboro Baptist Church is also seeking to use Perk Plaza, an area designated for public art displays, on Wednesday, July 20.
The permits were filed by Rachel Hockenbarger, attorney for the church and daughter of its founder Fred Phelps. They indicate five people will participate.
The city of Cleveland began accepting applications for protest parades and park use on May 31.
The RNC will be in Cleveland from July 18 to July 21.
