Protester shot during Charlotte riots dies in hospital

Cops have announced that Justin Carr, 26, who was shot on Wednesday night has died in hospital.

Charlotte officials – during the riots – initially tweeted that a civilian had been fatally shot – but they later issued the correction that he was on life support.

Police Chief Kerr Putney said detectives are determined to find who fired the fatal shots.

City officials said Carr was shot by another civilian – but allegations have now arisen on social media that police may have been involved.

Todd Zimmer in a Facebook post claims he saw Charlotte police shoot the protester in the head.

With an accompanying photo of the bloody scene, he wrote: “I am convinced that police shot this person with a rubber bullet or a tear gas canister.”

The post has attracted over 3,000 shares.

No arrests have been made.

Protests have also continued for a third night on Thursday – but there are no signs of violence so far.

Charlotte Mayor, Jennifer Roberts, has announced a midnight to 6am curfew – which will be in place until the end of the “state of emergency”.

It comes after two days of violent riots over the fatal shooting of Keith Lamar Scott, a disabled black man, on Tuesday.

Yesterday the Governor of North Carolina, Pat McCrory, declared a “state of emergency” after a prayer vigil turned violent.

Graphic videos which have emerged from the riots appear to show protesters trying to set a cameraman on fire while another shows a group throwing a CNN reporter to the ground.
