Hamas security forces dispersed thousands of protesters in the Gaza Strip who gathered Jan. 12 to protest electricity outages, BBC reported Jan. 13. Security forces fired into the air to clear the protesters, some of who reportedly hurled rocks at the officers. Electricity in Gaza has been limited to around three to four hours a day, a situation exacerbated by winter weather conditions. Hamas is in an even tighter spot than usual. A blockade in the Sinai Peninsula enforced by the Islamic State’s Wilayat Sinai has interrupted trade and smuggling into Gaza, increasing pressure on the militant group.
