PORTLAND (WGME) — Dressed head to toe in hazmat suits, demonstrators are asking Senator Susan Collins not to support a so-called “nuclear option” in Congress.
Right now, 43 democrats and Independent Senator Angus King say they will vote “no” on the president’s choice for the Supreme Court, Judge Neil Gorsuch.
That’s more than enough for a filibuster and to block the nomination.
However, republicans say they may rewrite senate rules, the so-called “nuclear option,” so a simple majority would be enough to end debate and move a nomination forward.
Demonstrators in Portland don’t want that to happen.
Senator Susan Collins says she supports Judge Gorsuch.
A spokeswoman for the republican says Senator Collins worked with members from both parties to try to reach an agreement that would avert changing the rules.
