The Colin Kaepernick kneeling row created headlines not just in the United States, but also around the world.
Kaepernick was once one of the hottest properties in the NFL, demanding multi-million pound contracts, but he put his career on the line in order to speak out for the wrongful treatment of black men across America.
The debate rolls on and he remains fighting for justice in his case, as he took the NFL to court over alleged collusion between owners to stop him getting contracts.
It remains a big talking point in the NFL – and is showing no sign of quieting down.
Here is an explanation of exactly what happened, and what could still happen in the future.
Who is Colin Kaepernick?
Kaepernick is a quarterback who spent five years playing for the San Francisco 49ers.
In 2013 he was an instrumental part of the 49ers side that reached their first Super Bowl since 1994, although they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
What exactly happened?
Kaepernick stunned the world when during the 49ers’ third pre-season game in 2016 he kneeled during the national anthem.
This was done, he said, as a protest against racial injustice in the States, and after the game he said: “I am not going to stand up and show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour.”
He continued to do this in all 49ers games, and was gradually joined by more and more athletes both in the NFL and outside the sport.
What was the reaction to this?
Kaepernick’s actions completely split opinion.
Some commended his bravery in standing up for the rights of ethnic minorities, while others were furious at what was seen as a perceived lack of respect towards the USA.
The NFL reported a downturn in figures during the 2016 season, and President Donald Trump said it was “terrible,” and called on the NFL to ban the player for one game.
What were the legal repercussions?
Kaepernick saw out his contract with the 49ers and became a free agent at the start of the 2017 league year.
However, he was not signed up by any team, and in November of that year he filed a grievance against the NFL and its owners accusing them of colluding to not hire him.
What will happen next?
The case is continuing to rumble on, but his former 49ers team-mate Anquan Boldin recently said he doubted Kaepernick would ever return to professional football, calling his case a “tragedy.”
Whilst the player is undoubtedly talented, the controversy surrounding his actions mean he has become much more than simply an American football player, and it is anyone’s guess what he could end up doing in the future.
