Farmers removed for staging protest against project

Claiming that 800 KV Raigarh (Chhattisgarh) – Pugalur (Tiruppur) HVDC power line work is being carried out at agricultural lands against the Madras High Court order, farmers entered the pit that is being dug for erecting towers and staged a protest at Muthaayepalayam village in Modakurichi Taluk here on Friday.

Led by K.V. Ponnaiyan, president of Tamil Nadu Swadeshi Farmers’ Association, farmers said that as per the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited project report, the tower line is proposed to be drawn through Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal and Karur districts. They said that the tower line should be drawn through the above districts only and not through Erode and Tiruppur districts. They said that the pathway was partially modified and officials refused to furnish the details regarding erection of towers in the two districts.

Since officials failed to produce any documents, a farmer, Umadevi (40) of the village moved the court seeking a stay to execute the work at her land. The court had on March 13 ordered status quo to be maintained and posted the case for next hearing on March 19. Farmers said that officials failed to obey the order and are continuing the work.

Later, the farmers entered the pits and were removed by the police.
