Parents across California kept their children out of school Friday to protest the state’s new sex education curriculum.
The “Sexxx Ed Sit Out” was organized by Informed Parents of California, a group that works to “expose the shocking truth about the sexualization and indoctrination of our children in California’s public schools.”
Members of the group are concerned that the new curriculum is inappropriate and sexualizes young children. California overhauled its sex education last week to include discussing gender identity with kindergartners, safe sex, sexual health and HIV prevention and LGBTQ topics.
The sit out locations are at the Department of Education buildings in at least 18 counties across the state from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. local time.
A flyer from the group for the event says the districts “are ignoring us.”
“We’ve tried to reason with the districts. We’ve rallied asking them to take action. We’ve spoken at the State Dept of Ed and so far they are ignoring us,” the flyer said. “Let’s show them that without our children there won’t be schools!”
The group also held a sit out over sex education in February.
