The camp of Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto expressed confidence that the electoral protest filed against him by former mayor Robert Eusebio would eventually be dismissed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
“Confident naman po kami sa magiging resulta ng kaso [We are confident on the outcome of the election case],” Sotto said in an interview after attending the hearing of his case at the poll body in Manila Thursday.
“Harassment na lang po ito pero [This is purely harassment but] we will respect the process, we will respect the decision of the Comelec,” he added.
His lawyer Romulo Macalintal said the petition should actually be dismissed by the poll body for lack of basis.
“Kwinestyon lamang nila yung 81 VCMs (vote counting machines) sa 81 clustered precincts and it only involve about 50,000 voters [Only 81 VCMs from 81 clustered precincts involving 50,000 votes are being questioned],” he said.
“Ang lead ni Mayor Sotto is 86,500. So, kahit naman ibigay namin sa kanya lahat ng 30,000 na yun it will not affect his commanding lead [Mayor Sotto’s lead is 86,500. Even if you all of the 30,000 votes there, it won’t affect his commanding lead],” added Macalintal.
“Kaya sabi namin yung mga ganitong election protest, hindi na dapat i-consider ito [Election protests like this should not be considered]. The Comelec should not give credit nor give due course to this kind of petition. Otherwise, it runs counter to Comelec’s claim that the election was clean, honest, and orderly,” he said.
Sotto’s camp has been given 10 days to submit their memorandum.
