Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Zarate will wear a hand painted protest-inspired barong Tagalog to Monday’s State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Zarate said the barong Tagalog was handpainted by Karapatan legal counsel Ma. Sol Taule showing Chinese and Filipino ships at sea.
“[It is a] calling for the assertion of Philippine sovereignty and sovereign rights within our exclusive economic zone (EEZ) over the West Philippine Sea, and, the defense of our fisherfolk and environment,” the Bayan Muna Partylist said in a Facebook post.
Rep. Ferdinand Gaite’s barong shows a hammer design crushing the practice of “endo” or short-term labor contracting scheme.
“[The] study sketch of Bayan Muna Rep. Ferdie Gaite’s SONA barong calls for a P750 national minimum wage and an end to endo,” Bayan Muna said.
Bayan Muna and other members of the Makabayan bloc have worn in previous years barongs and Filipiniana gowns with hand-painted messages.
Zarate said on Tuesday that the Makabayan bloc lawmakers will attend the 18th Congress opening before heading out to join the People’s SONA on the streets.
